ASTHMA - The Facts
Asthma is a condition that affects the airways – the small tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs. People with asthma have airways that are almost always sensitive and inflamed.
5.2 million people in the UK are currently receiving treatment for asthma: 1.1 million children (1 in 10) and 4.1 million adults (1 in 12).
Every 18 minutes a child is admitted to hospital in England, Scotland or Wales because of their asthma.
On average, 1,400 people die from asthma each year in the UK alone. This is almost four people per day, or one person every seven hours.
Asthma now costs the NHS in Britain an average of £889 million per year.
Over 12.7 million working days are lost to asthma each year.
